Two Wings of Leadership: Soaring Through Balance and Integration
Leadership today is at a crossroads. The paradigms that have long guided decision-making in organizations — competition, control, and individualism — are showing their limits. A new model is emerging, one that integrates not only strategic intelligence and vision, but also emotional depth, compassion, and connection.
In their new book, ‘Two Wings of Leadership’ launched during ebbf’s first international event in Latin America in Santiago de Chile, Mónica Martínez Vargas and Charles R. Howard offered a a provocative and hopeful invitation. A compelling, courageous, and deeply needed framework to help leaders and communities move from fragmentation to wholeness. At its heart lies the invitation to rediscover the full spectrum of our human potential by harmonizing what they call the two wings of leadership: the feminine and the masculine.
This isn’t a conversation about gender. It’s a conversation about energy, capacity, and coherence. And it’s one that is urgently needed in boardrooms, community gatherings, and family conversations alike.

The Flight of Balance: Why Two Wings Matter
Drawing from spiritual teachings, social science, and decades of leadership experience, Mónica and Charles use a powerful metaphor to guide their approach: humanity is like a bird — it can only soar to its highest heights when both wings are strong and balanced. Likewise, individuals and organizations can only truly thrive when they integrate both masculine and feminine leadership qualities.
Masculine energy — often expressed through qualities like structure, clarity, action, and direction — has historically dominated leadership narratives. While powerful and necessary, it becomes unbalanced without its counterpart.
Feminine energy — embodied through intuition, empathy, nurturing, and collaboration — has been historically undervalued in professional and societal settings. Yet it is this very energy that brings sustainability, depth, and human connection to leadership.
As Mónica highlighted “To lead with both wings is to embrace our wholeness: not choosing between action or reflection, but weaving them into a leadership that uplifts others and transforms systems.”
Together, these two wings create lift. When integrated, they allow individuals and organizations to soar with balance, grace, and purpose.
The Inner Landscape of Leadership
The book doesn’t offer quick fixes or one-size-fits-all models. Instead, it provides a process of deep inquiry. Mónica and Charles invite readers to reflect on their own leadership style, consider which energies they tend to favor, and explore the gaps that may be preventing fuller, more effective engagement.
They introduce a framework of four core energies:
Presence: The capacity to be fully attuned — embodying stillness, curiosity, and intentionality.
Power: The ability to take action, set direction, and mobilize.
Connection: The relational space of empathy, listening, and shared purpose.
Wisdom: The integration of intuition and insight for long-term impact.
The authors emphasize that these energies are not assigned to any gender. Instead, they are inherent in all of us — and in every organization — and are waiting to be activated, balanced, and brought into dynamic synergy.
Walking the Talk: The Personal Journeys Behind the Two Wings
One of the most refreshing aspects of ‘Two Wings of Leadership’ is its vulnerability. Both authors openly share their own journeys — how personal setbacks, moments of disconnection, and professional transitions led them to reexamine the assumptions they held about success, impact, and what it means to lead.
From mining companies in Chile to corporate teams in the U.S., from spiritual gatherings to academic forums, Mónica and Charles have brought these ideas to life through practice, not just theory. Their model isn’t abstract; it’s lived, tested, and transformative.
They also highlight the tension many leaders feel: the pressure to perform vs. the yearning to connect; the drive for results vs. the desire for authenticity. Their message is clear: we don’t have to choose. Integrated leadership doesn’t dilute strength — it amplifies it.
From Polarity to Possibility
In an era marked by polarities — economic vs. environmental priorities, logic vs. emotion, autonomy vs. community — Two Wings of Leadership offers a third path: integration. The authors speak to the global hunger for unity and the need to move beyond binaries toward wholeness.
They challenge us to examine how leadership training, performance evaluations, and even our language reflect an imbalance. Do we reward control over creativity? Results over relationships? Do we celebrate confidence but silence vulnerability?
The shift they advocate is not cosmetic. It is cultural, systemic, and deeply personal. It asks us to unlearn, to reimagine, and to reconstruct how we lead, serve, and show up.
Charles highlighted “This moment crystallized my understanding of the Two Wings of humanity: we each possess both masculine and feminine energies, but we may call upon them differently, respond to challenges with a unique blend, and ultimately contribute to the world in ways that are both similar and wonderfully distinct”.
This insight came to Charles after a street incident in Salvador, Brazil, where his then twelve-year-old daughter, Jasmine, showed remarkable assertiveness and decisiveness — qualities he typically associated with masculinity — by instructing him to get back into the car after an object was thrown at it. This experience led him to realize that strength and assertiveness are not exclusive to men and that men and women often process and react to situations in distinct ways
Leading with Both Wings
This book is more than a guide — it is an invitation. An invitation to:
- Listen deeply to ourselves and others.
- Honor both action and reflection.
- Balance discipline with grace.
- Lead not from ego, but from essence.
It is a call to build organizations that are not only high-performing but also humane. Teams that do not only innovate but also belong. Communities that do not only grow but also heal.
As Mónica and Charles remind us, a single wing can flap hard, but it will never lift us off the ground. To rise — personally, professionally, and collectively — we must lead with both.
